To successfully maintain the Department of Energy’s (DOE) environmental management mission on the Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR), a new waste disposal facility is needed. The current disposal facility is nearing capacity but there is significant cleanup remaining. DOE has worked collaboratively with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) to develop plans for a new facility—the Environmental Management Disposal Facility (EMDF). This facility will allow DOE to maintain its cleanup momentum in Oak Ridge, enhancing safety and enabling science and national security missions. (Read latest EMDF fact sheet.)
