The “Beat Burnout” workshop that was attended by more than 50 workers offered fantastic insights into understanding and preventing burnout. Now, let’s keep that momentum going! Here are practical steps everyone can use to protect their well-being and maintain a healthy, engaged approach to work and life:
- Prioritize Self-Care Daily: Make time for activities that recharge you, whether it’s reading a book, going for a walk, listening to music, or practicing mindfulness.
- Set Clear Boundaries: Protect your personal time by setting clear boundaries between work and home life.
- Manage Your Time Effectively: Use tools and techniques to organize your tasks. Prioritize what’s most important and tackle one thing at a time.
- Build a Support System: Connect with trusted colleagues, friends, or family members. Share your challenges and successes.
- Take Regular Breaks: Short breaks throughout the day can improve your focus and reduce stress. Get up, stretch, walk a bit, or simply look away from your screen.
- Focus on What You Can Control: Sometimes, things are outside of our control. Instead of dwelling on those, focus your energy on what you can influence.
- Reflect and Adjust: Regularly check in with yourself. Are you noticing any early signs of stress or exhaustion? Adjust your routine or strategies as needed to prevent these feelings from escalating into burnout.
Preventing burnout is an ongoing process. Starting May 21, the Mental Wellbeing Center is hosting Focus Sessions on Work Stress & Burnout. Led by lead counselor Kenneth Williams, these sessions are designed for small groups to have open dialogue for:
-
- Gaining further insight and understanding
- Sharing experiences and challenges
- Gaining tools to put in your tool bag
This is a terrific opportunity for teams to increase communication, strengthen connections, and build support.
If you are interested in joining a focus session or scheduling one for your team, contact the Mental Wellbeing Center at Navigate@orcc.doe.gov or call 865-535-8558.
