When receiving a suspicious package, maintain a questioning attitude if you identify any of the following visual markings: foreign, missing, or unrecognized place of origin or return address; unusually large titles; inappropriate usage of restrictive markings (e.g., “To be opened only by”); poorly handwritten or cut out letters; and excessive information packing or wrapping. Something else to make note of is if it has an odor, has any protruding wires, and if there are any holes in it.
Avoid unnecessary handling of any package or mail you find that is visually concerning; however, if you have handled, other indicators that may signal alarm are if it feels greasy, grainy, or powdery. You may also notice if it feels unbalanced or is excessively heavy for its size.
If any of these identifiers or indicators are noticed, notify ESWO, ORNL LSS, Y-12 PSS, or OROC using the yellow emergency reporting lanyard card based on your location.
