UCOR’s Deactivation and Demolition (D&D) teams at the Y-12 National Security Complex’s 561,000-square-foot Alpha-4 facility are making substantial progress in preparing the former uranium separation facility for deactivation. Building on achieving “cold & dark” status in August, crews have successfully completed sorting and segmenting 447 legacy containers ahead of schedule. These shipments of legacy waste…
UCOR constructing facilities at Y-12 to place workers closer to buildings
UCOR’s Y-12 D&D craft are constructing temporary facilities to place workers closer to the Beta-4 and Alpha-5 buildings. They’ve placed seven concrete pads to support electrical racks and equipment that will provide power to these temporary facilities, which will support upcoming deactivation and demolition work. Workers remove final hot cell from Building 3038 at ORNL
Crews have removed the fifth and final hot cell from ORNL Building 3038, Isotope Development Laboratory. This is the last piece of large equipment to be removed from the facility before deactivation. The hot cell will be transported to TRU Waste Operations for storage until TWPC is ready to process it. Building 3038 was constructed…
UCOR begins demolition of final portion of Alpha-2
UCOR has demolished the east side of Alpha-2 and has begun demolishing the final portion, the west end, reflecting the significant progress on the largest demolition project at Y-12. To date, crews have demolished approximately 180,254 square feet. The east side demo was a huge undertaking, resulting in 133,052 square feet demolished. Crews have demolished…
UCOR Nuc Ops continues piping replacement project
The UCOR Nuclear Operations team successfully replaced the J-2101 A/B/C Discharge to 3608 piping and components as part of the overall 2600 Piping Replacement Project. This system transports radiological water collected from various locations to ORNL Building 3608 for final processing. Crews are currently installing heat trace and insulation. This replacement is the tenth of…
Groundwater sampling is performed on the Oak Ridge Reservation to ensure that the groundwater is not being negatively impacted by past operations. UCOR periodically performs sampling at ETTP Heritage Center and a former scrap yard site, called White Wing Scrap Yard, to monitor for environmental impacts. To see our groundwater sampling team in action, watch…
Message from Ken Rueter – My Future with UCOR
Dear UCOR Team: As I reflect on my time with UCOR, I am filled with gratitude for the extraordinary workforce that has made our success possible. Together, we have safely delivered on one of the Department of Energy’s most complex cleanup missions, often ahead of schedule and under budget—while setting new standards for safety, productivity,…
Brokk remote demolition mockup helping prepare for hot cell work
UCOR’s deactivation team at ORNL performed the final mockup of the Brokk remote demolition unit as they simulated operations to be done in hot cell A at building 3026. The remotely operated equipment allows the team to significantly increase workers’ distance from potential hazards. The unit will allow workers to conduct significant deactivation work safely…
Crews remove glovebox from Building 3038
UCOR deactivation crews have removed a glovebox from Building 3038, the former Isotope Development Laboratory at ORNL. This glovebox is the last large piece of legacy equipment cleared from the east end of the facility. Crews are nearly finished with the equipment removal phase of deactivation, which included removing four of the five hot cells…
LiDAR technology deployed to assist at Y-12
For the first time ever, UCOR has been able to deploy a remote sensing technology in a Y-12 building that will provide necessary information to assist with remedial actions. Workers have deployed LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) in the basement of Beta-1 to accurately take measurements inside the facility, which will provide greater accuracy for…
