The ORNL Deactivation and Demolition (D&D) team has safely completed the current phase of characterization scope in Buildings 3042 and 3038. Characterization is necessary to determine the contaminants in the waste stream to ensure proper disposal and compliance with the waste disposal facility acceptance criteria. As obstacles were removed from the facilities and sample locations became available, the team collected 344 samples from deactivation and demolition waste. In addition, 150 quantitative nondestructive assay (NDA) measurements were performed on materials packaged and removed from 3038. These measurements determine the level of nuclear material to ensure safety and regulatory compliance is achieved.
