Workers with the Y‐12 Alpha‐2 Utility Reroutes Project have made significant progress with pipe replacement along Second Street reaching the Alpha‐2 building. The reroutes crews are working near where the Alpha‐2 team is prepping for building demo. Both teams are closely focused on their individual work areas to keep the Alpha‐2 demolition schedule on track.
With the underground work for utility reroutes completed, crews are focused on installing new piping along Second Street. They recently completed system testing and turnover to CNS Utilities of the nitrogen and argon systems. The focus has shifted to steam piping along Second Street. Main sections, bridge sections, expansion loops, and accompanying pipe supports have all been installed over the past few weeks and are expected to be completed in October.
Additionally, the multi‐disciplinary team of pipefitters, welders, carpenters, laborers, and riggers are installing new piping systems around Old Steam Plant (9401‐01) to CNS’s 9202 Development Facility. This team is working diligently on a small footprint to make a big impact for the site. As new construction wraps up in November, demolition preparation activities will begin on the soon‐to‐be abandoned sections of piping systems currently attached to the northside of the Alpha‐2 building.
