UCOR Radiological Protection (RP) Continuing Training Program developed a new and exciting training method for 160 radiological technicians, lead techs, and supervisors. The program created an interactive escape room combining multiple elements from previous training.
Lead RP Training Instructor Gina Allison and RP group member Tim Hughes developed this escape room with a series of locks and boxes, some of which could only be opened by correctly solving radiological protection (RP) math problems. The group was given initial radiological characterization data and had to make decisions based on survey data obtained from clues to move forward. Allison and Hughes found that this form of training challenged the techs in an interactive, enjoyable experience.
“It was fun to watch and see who had been paying attention during previous training and understood what was expected of them,” said Hughes.
They had two rooms set up identically and teams of 4 or 5 technicians who would work together to see who could escape the room first. There were no prizes given for winners, but bragging rights were earned. The fastest time a group of techs were able to escape was 55 minutes.
“As an instructor, it was rewarding to see previous training applied during the escape room activities,” Allison said. “I also enjoyed seeing the teamwork among the technicians as they worked their way through the puzzles and clues.”
