While we may enjoy the extra hour of sleep, the time change can present challenges. Research indicates that fewer daylight hours can lead to an increase in traffic accidents. It is also believed to be associated with mental health issues such as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which affects millions of Americans each year.
- Consider the following tips to prepare for and remain Mission Ready after the time change:
- Maintain healthy sleep, diet, and exercise routines, limiting intake of alcohol and caffeine.
- Be aware of changes in your mood or eating habits.
- Don’t ignore signs of fatigue and don’t drive while drowsy.
- With the likelihood that you will be driving longer in the dark, check your vehicle to ensure that headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals are working properly.
Notify your supervisor if you are not physically, mentally, or emotionally ready to perform a task. Be a good wingman and watch out for your coworkers.
