Where allowed, the use of earbuds or a headset at work can help boost focus and reduce distractions. However, they can also introduce safety risks that should be taken into consideration.
- Communication: Does the use of earbuds or a headset increase or decrease your ability to communicate with those around you? If using a device designed for communication, ensure you are in a safe location and that the device is approved for use. Walking while using devices such as cell phones, earbuds, or headsets is discouraged as they can distract the user and reduce situational awareness.
- Environment: Before using earbuds or a headset, ensure that you can hear enough background noise to be safe. If you are in an office, could you hear a fire alarm? If you are walking outside, could you hear approaching traffic, equipment, and people? Chose the “aware” mode, wear only one earbud, or consider a bone conduction style when earbud use is approved.
- Noise levels: Listening to music or podcasts at high volumes can contribute to noise-induced hearing loss. Keep the volume low and limit the time you use earbuds or a headset to prevent damage.
We are responsible for maintaining awareness and focus while walking and working. Don’t let the use of earbuds or headsets be the distraction that leads to injury.
