As we approach Memorial Day weekend, take measures to remain focused while at work. If your mind is wandering from the task being performed, slow down and pause to regain situational awareness. Before leaving for the holiday, secure and configure work areas and make sure to address anticipated weather conditions.
The National Safety Council warns that holiday travelers face an elevated risk of fatal motor vehicle crashes during the Memorial Day weekend. Whether traveling near home or embarking on a trip, remember to:
- Drink wisely: Alcohol is historically a factor in nearly 40% of Memorial Day weekend traffic-related fatalities. Use a rideshare, designated driver, or stay overnight.
- Plan for potential delays: Build additional time into your travel schedule and if possible, avoid peak travel times, such as Friday and Monday afternoons.
- Take notice of dangerous driving: Keep a safe distance from and avoid drivers who are exhibiting signs of being impaired or distracted.
- Belt up and look twice: Wear a seatbelt to reduce the risk of a crash-related fatal injuries by 45%. Check blind spots carefully to avoid contact with vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcycles.
If your plans include being on the water, consider the following tips to protect yourself and others:
- Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket while boating or swimming in natural bodies of water.
- Stay in designated boating and swimming areas and never swim alone.
- Designate a focused “water watcher” when children are near pools or open water—inflatable toys are not substitutes for life jackets and supervision.
- Frequently reapply sunscreen. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and heat-related illnesses.
Think ahead, plan ahead, and watch out for others as you enjoy the well-deserved break over the Memorial Day weekend.
