ORNL Nuclear Operations has started the final round of above ground piping replacements at the Building 2600 Process Waste Facility.
Project, maintenance, and operations crews worked together to minimize the downtime of the Liquid and Gaseous Waste Operations (LGWO) system by replacing piping from the 2105 Sump to the 2106 Sump first. This will allow transfers to continue during the remaining piping replacements.
As part of the evolution, precise hoisting and rigging operations are required to remove the old carbon steel piping and install new stainless-steel piping.
“Rigging crews work hand-in-hand with facility operators, radiological protection, pipefitters, and welders,” Project Manager Chris Seeber said. “Together they deliver, install, and test new piping components to ensure the replacement is a success.”
Once the piping is replaced, electricians and insulators will focus on installing heat trace and insulation. With the project expected to wrap up in July, this will conclude a 2.5-year effort with a total of 14 piping segments replaced.
