Workers at Oak Ridge Graphite Reactor (OGR) Buildings 3001/3002 have removed a 4,300-lb cement duct cap to perform radiological surveys, take characterization samples, and install a form to be used for pouring a concrete mixture into an outside ventilation duct. Once the characterization sample data has been verified, the entire duct will be filled with 230 cubic yards of the mixture.
Another crew will partially drain the water from the 3002 canal to prepare for sludge removal. The sludge and remaining water will be filtered and pumped into 80 55-gallon drums and mixed with concrete to minimize dose levels for shipment. Crews will also continue decontaminating the support structures and placing a fixative in the 3002 cell house preparing for demolition, which is tentatively set for early next year.
