UCOR D&D crews are currently testing their new BROKK B110 remote demolition unit. Last week, they tested it at the ORNL Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor site and did a mockup of the 3026 hot cell. This remotely operated equipment allows the project to significantly increase workers’ distance from potential hazards. The BROKK unit is small enough to be lowered through a hatch into basement areas but still stout enough to let workers conduct significant dismantling and shearing work. The B110 has multiple special attachments that allow for lifting, moving, and shearing/cutting pipe and other materials.
Once testing is complete, there will be several uses for BROKK equipment as UCOR moves toward using more remote equipment to provide safer, more efficient D&D methods.
