A UCOR initiative diverted substantial amounts of construction materials from landfills by recycling asphalt from the decommissioned portion of Bear Creek Road. After removing the old road surface, 440 tons of asphalt was used at the Environmental Management Disposal Facility construction site. Additionally, 3,140 tons was transported to DuraCap Asphalt Company, who, in collaboration with Edgewater—another UCOR subcontractor—processed the reclaimed asphalt for reuse in their new asphalt mixtures.
This innovative project demonstrates a commitment to sustainable practices. By giving old asphalt a new life, this initiative helps to reduce landfill waste by diverting tons of material from landfills. Diverting materials extends the landfill’s lifespan and preserves valuable space. The project also conserved resources by reducing the need to extract and process virgin materials, which minimizes the environmental impact. Lastly, the project helped to promote local businesses.
