The ORNL Transuranic Waste Operations team recently shipped the first concrete vault of legacy high-activity, low-level waste from 7822K to Energy Solutions.
The team that made this shipment possible included iron workers, equipment operators, truck drivers, radiological protection, chemical operators, carpenters, transportation, safety, work planning, and project management.
“The teams combined experience and teamwork directly contributed to the successful completion of this operation,” said Waste Disposition Specialist John Witzeman.
This shipment is a critical first step in disposing of a challenging waste stream. These concrete vaults have been in storage since the 1990s and contain various forms of high- activity, low-level waste generated through historical research across ORNL. Disposition of these vaults is a significant step in eliminating legacy waste and reducing risk on the Oak Ridge Reservation.
