[Supervisor Success: Mastering People Skills & Cultivating High-Performing Teams is a monthly series from UCOR’s Human Resources Manager Mary Alice Douglass designed to support front line supervisors.]
Good time management is super important for you as a supervisor. It helps you juggle all your responsibilities, hit deadlines, and still be there for your team. Without solid time management, you can quickly feel overwhelmed, miss opportunities, and create stress for everyone
To get a handle on your time, figure out what’s most urgent and important, and use tools like calendars and to-do lists. Remember, delegating tasks effectively is a huge time-saver. Also, regularly review your schedule and adjust priorities when new things pop up.
Try this: At the start of each week, pinpoint your top three “must-do” tasks that really push your team forward. Block out specific, uninterrupted time in your calendar to work on those.
Also, try this: For one week, keep a simple log of how you spend your time in 30-minute chunks. It can help you spot where your time is really going and where you can be more efficient.
Avoid this: Don’t try to juggle big, important tasks with constant interruptions; it usually means nothing gets done well. Also, make sure you’re blocking out time for your own critical work and strategic thinking, instead of letting others fill your entire schedule.
