[This five-part series on neurodivergence is designed to help our team understand, support, and value the different ways we all process information.]
We all communicate differently. Some neurodivergent employees (people with natural differences in how their minds interpret language and social cues), especially autistic individuals, speak directly and take language literally. They might miss hints, jokes, or unwritten social rules.
At the same time, others might misinterpret direct language as rude or aggressive. Communication is a two-way street. Clear and honest communication prevents misunderstandings and reduces stress for the entire team.
- Manager Tip: Write clear, specific instructions. Instead of saying “Review this when you can,” say “Please edit this draft and email it back by Thursday at 3:00 PM.”
- Team Member Tip: Avoid hints or sarcasm. Say exactly what you mean, and ask for what you need directly and kindly.
