According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding caused nearly one-third of the 42,000 vehicle-related fatalities which occurred in 2022. About 87 percent of these speeding-related traffic fatalities occurred on non-interstate roads and streets.
People often speed because they (1) believe the speed limit is unnecessary, (2) think they will not get caught, (3) want to reach their destination sooner, or (4) are overconfident in their driving skills.
The risk of a crash increases by 4% with every mile increase over the speed limit. Speed limits are set for normal road conditions. Driving too fast for conditions and/or exceeding the posted speed limit
can increase the vehicle stopping distance and increase the risk of serious injury and death, especially among pedestrians.
