“Ghost-tapping” is a payment card scam exploiting contactless technology. Criminals use a hidden reader to wirelessly scan card details from NFC-enabled (Near Field Communication-enabled) cards. These cards allow short-range wireless communication within 1-2 inches. Scammers often do this in crowded public places. Victims don’t realize their card is being scanned until unauthorized charges appear.
To protect yourself:
- Use RFID-blocking wallets/sleeves: These block signals, preventing unauthorized card data access.
- Store cards safely: Keep cards in secure wallet compartments, not loose pockets.
- Be alert in crowds: Pay extra attention to your belongings in busy areas.
- Monitor account statements: Regularly check for unrecognized transactions to dispute them quickly.
- Enable transaction alerts: Get instant notifications for card activity from your bank.
These steps enhance your card security against ghost-tapping and similar fraud.
