UCOR has added a new type of crane to its D&D inventory. Last week, several iron workers and operators were trained on the assembly and disassembly of a Spydercrane. This crane is the first of its type for UCOR.
It will be used inside the Alpha-4 facility assisting the workforce with ongoing sanitization efforts. The overhead cranes that already exist inside the facility are in disrepair and making them compliant would have cost millions of dollars. Enter the relatively inexpensive Spydercrane. It is a mini-crawler crane designed for use in confined and low-access areas. Though small, the crane has an effective reach of 45 feet and can be disassembled for reuse in hard-to-reach areas.
The primary use of the Spydercrane will be inside the Alpha-4 facility high bay, removing installed process equipment weighing up to a half ton.
According to Chris Waters, Hoisting and Rigging Program Manager, development of specialized training was necessary due to the challenges of transporting, rigging, and assembling this equipment by conventional methods.
This crane represents another innovative and cost-saving solution from UCOR.
