[Supervisor Success: Mastering People Skills & Cultivating High-Performing Teams is a monthly series from UCOR’s Human Resources Manager Mary Alice Douglass designed to support front line supervisors.]
Delegation is a superpower for supervisors. It helps you get more done, gives your team members a chance to grow, and frees up your own time for bigger things. You don’t just hand off tasks. You pick the right person for the job, give them the tools and authority they need, and clearly explain your expectations.
When you delegate well, your team feels empowered and grows professionally. To delegate like a pro, first think about the task. Does it offer a good learning opportunity? Then, clearly explain what your team needs to do, when to do it, and what “good quality” looks like. Make sure they have the resources and the power to make decisions. Be available for questions without hovering. Showing that you trust your team with responsibility really boosts their confidence.
Try this: Look at your to-do list. Find one recurring task a team member could definitely handle. Write down clear instructions and describe what the finished product should look like.
Also, try this: When you delegate, explain why this task matters and how it fits into the bigger picture. This gives your team member context and shows them the value of their work.
Avoid this: Don’t just toss a task over the fence without any explanation, resources, or support. And once you’ve delegated, don’t hover or micromanage; let them own it.
You can find the entire series of Supervisor Success articles on the Human Resources space of UCOR Hub.
