Oak Ridge Reservation Landfills (ORRL) crews are expanding their spoils area as a proactive effort to preserve space in existing landfills.
Spoils are clean dirt, soil, and similar materials that are generated by cleanup projects but are not considered waste. Staging these areas outside of the landfills help reserve space in landfills. Additionally, these spoils are available for reuse if a project needs clean materials.
To accomplish this expansion, 14 acres of trees were felled, and a lumber company accepted the trees for beneficial reuse. Additionally, clean borrow material will be removed from the spoils area and reused to provide cover for the ORRL. Then, the prepared area will be ready to stage new spoils.
