UCOR cleanup efforts at ORNL continue advancing as Building 3544, Process Waste Treatment Plant, officially transfers from the Nuclear Operations team to ORNL deactivation and demolition (D&D) crews.
The transfer signifies that nuclear operational work inside the building has concluded and the facility is now entering characterization and deactivation activities ahead of future demolition. D&D crews will conduct surveys, reduce hazards, and prepare systems and equipment for eventual teardown.
Building 3544 previously supported water treatment and management efforts during ORNL’s decades-long research mission. Its transition into D&D reflects continued progress in removing aging excess facilities to reduce risk and prepare ORNL’s central campus for future science and research missions that are critical as East Tennessee becomes the nation’s nuclear epicenter.
With facilities on Isotope Row progressing toward demolition-ready next month, resources including deactivation crews are now being redeployed to Building 3544 to safely restore the next cleanup priority on ORNL’s footprint.
