UCOR crews are practicing hazardous material removal in preparation for entry into the final hot cell at Building 3026, the former Radioisotope Development Laboratory. Hazardous material will be removed remotely from the hot cell to protect crews from highly radioactive items by using a BROKK remote-controlled robot.
Workers built scaffolding at the Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor to simulate the hot cell structure. Crews use the BROKK system to lower drums into the scaffolding structure and then remove them, simulating how material will be removed through the hot cell roof.
Approximately 60 drums of material will be removed during the deactivation of the hot cell. This activity is expected to take place in late September or early October with demolition expected in 2026. Once this is activity is completed, the last remaining cell will be demolished, concluding the above ground demolition at 3026.
