Previously, UCOR did not transition to Type 2 hard hats due to their weight and limited ventilation. With modern-day engineering and technology, these concerns are no longer an issue. Not only do the safety helmets enhance safety, but they actually reduce heat stress. The hard hats have an insulating material, called Koroyd, that looks like a green honeycomb. This technology helps reduce the hazard that comes with ambient temperatures on the head. These helmets have a heat index reduction of up to 8°F / 4.5°C.
The chin-strap ensures your protection, and you can improve comfort easily by tightening it properly so it does not move or rub. Affordable chin strap covers or pads are commercially available to make the equipment have optimal comfort. These covers are generally slip over or Velcro and do not change the form, fit, or function of the PPE.
Now, there are over 30 models for you to choose from so UCOR can responsibly phase in the industry-best equipment that can better protect you. Approximately 85% of head impacts occur laterally from the sides, front, or back—which Type 1 hard hats don’t protect against.
UCOR’s Training & Development Program demonstrated the Type 2 hard hats at Block Training. Workers learned how to correctly wear the hard hat, tighten the chin strap, and get a first look at what continuous improvement really looks like.
