Our team at the Y-12 Alpha-2 facility are in the last stages of deactivation before we begin demolition this fall. Recently, they cut concrete on the first floor to create additional access to remove waste from the basement. This allows more effective access and moves the project closer to being ready to demolish.
Alpha-2 will be the first of the nine former Alpha and Beta uranium enrichment facilities we will demolish. The nine buildings housed calutron racetracks that performed electromagnetic separation of uranium.
The three-story Alpha-2 facility has a total of 324,448 square feet, which includes a partial basement. It stands on a footprint of 107,619 square feet.
