Breast Cancer Awareness was the topic at the Women’s Network final luncheon of the fiscal year at Heritage Center. More than 50 members of the workforce attended to discuss preventative measures and have an open dialogue for questions and shared experiences. The event was led by UCOR Health Services.
The employee resource group kicked off the meeting discussing interesting trivia questions related to breast cancer.
Did you know that men can get breast cancer, alcohol consumption raises your risk of breast cancer, and breast cancer can develop without a lump present?
The educational topic was led by UCOR Health Services and wellness team, Elevate. The subject matter experts revealed how huge advancements in detection and treatment have shown a decline in breast cancer fatalities by over 40%, despite breast cancer affecting every 1 out of 8 women.
Health Services personnel then discussed prevention techniques. The experts revealed how breast self-exams are no longer recommended for detecting breast cancer, but that it is beneficial to know your own anatomy so you are aware when something is not typical.
Subject matter experts touched on many topics, but left attendees with the following:
- If you are over 40, schedule the mammogram, no excuses
- Feel well? Go get your mammogram – Some breast cancers present without symptoms
- Modify your risk factors: eat a healthy diet, don’t smoke, and engage in regular physical activity
- If you know someone that has had or is currently dealing with Breast Cancer, continue to offer support
- Ask your buddy, friend, sister, and coworker: Have you gotten a mammogram yet?
The Women’s Employee Resource group, as well as Veterans, RISE, and Young Professionals, is open to everyone. Whether you or a woman in your life needs to know about certain topics, including breast cancer, the Women’s Network is where you can learn for yourself and others.
