[This is the first in our series: Power Up Data: Understanding Information Around You. You can find all of the articles from this series in HUBi’s User Corner.]
Have you ever checked the weather before deciding what to wear? Or looked at a recipe to figure out how much flour to use for cookies? When you do these things, you are using data!
So, what is data? Simply put, data is information. It can be numbers, words, facts, or observations. We create and use data all the time, often without even thinking about it.
Think about your daily life:
- Your fitness tracker collects data about your steps and heart rate.
- The music app on your phone uses data to suggest songs you might like.
- Traffic apps use data to show you the fastest way to get to work.
At our company, we also use lots of data. We look at:
- Project timelines: Are we on track to finish our projects on time?
- Budget figures: Where are we compared to what we projected?
- Client feedback: What does our client think about our services?
All these pieces of information are data. They help us understand what’s happening around us and measure how well we are doing. Data helps us see the full picture and make sense of things.
You might hear fancy words like “big data” or “data analytics.” Don’t worry about those for now! The main idea is simple: data is just information. And understanding this information helps us all do our jobs better, from making small decisions each day to planning big projects for the future.
Get ready to become “data smart”! Over the next few articles, we’ll explore how to unlock the power of this everyday information.
“Try This!” Challenge:
Look around you right now. What are two examples of data you see or use? Maybe it’s the number of unread emails in your inbox or the date on your calendar. Notice how data is truly everywhere!
