The Waste Operations team recently completed maintenance of the Oak Ridge Reservation Landfill V Leachate Collection System Holding Tanks. Leachate, a liquid usually caused by rainwater that drains from the landfill, is pumped to one of two 125,000-gallon holding tanks.
Workers perform maintenance every two to three years. Maintenance timing is critical, and tanks are cleaned sequentially to maintain storage capability due to leachate fluctuations during storm events.
After draining the tanks, workers enter them and vacuum the debris. They then pressure wash, inspect, and repair the internal systems before returning the tanks back to service.
