The Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management (OREM) and partner contractors, including UCOR and Isotek, yesterday hosted a community open house showcasing transformative cleanup progress across the Oak Ridge Reservation and previewing high-impact projects set for 2027. The session was held at the Oak Ridge Conference Center, drawing more than 60 attendees.
Key Site Highlights
- Y-12 National Security Complex: Crews have cleared over 20 acres and demolished nearly 600,000 sq. ft. of legacy facilities. Deactivation has prepared the massive Beta-1 facility (210,000 sq. ft.) for demolition in 2027, with prep work underway at Beta-4.
- Oak Ridge National Laboratory: Demolition of “Isotope Row” wraps up in 2026, clearing central campus space for future scientific research. Additionally, 75% of the high-priority uranium-233 inventory has been safely removed—saving $175 million and advancing material extraction for cancer treatment research.
- East Tennessee Technology Park: Cleanup continues to fuel regional growth. More than 2,500 acres have been transferred, spurring $10 billion in private investments and an estimated 2,500 jobs, supported by the newly launched Site Reuse Support Program.
- Critical Infrastructure: The Transuranic Waste Processing Center beat its first-year oxide waste target by four months, while prep work advances for the future Environmental Management Disposal Facility to support ongoing operations.
Together, the projects highlighted at the event demonstrate how OREM’s cleanup mission across the Oak Ridge Reservation is reducing environmental risks while clearing the way for new national security and scientific missions and creating opportunities for economic development and beneficial reuse.
