UCOR helps DOE save taxpayers $59 Million
Oak Ridge, Tennessee, May 7, 2025 —Two members of United Cleanup Oak Ridge’s (UCOR) Supply Chain team were recognized for their work to help the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) save $2 billion.
The Supply Chain Management Center (SCMC), a DOE sourcing program, has saved more than $2 billion in partnership with DOE Environmental Management (EM) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) prime contractors. DOE’s program offers contractors purchasing agreements and digital procurement tools, saving time by reducing duplication of effort and enabling buyers to focus on site-specific needs.
UCOR is the prime contractor for DOE’s environmental cleanup work in Oak Ridge. The SCMC recognized Kala Dickerson, UCOR’s Director of Project Integration and Business Services, and Jeff Burgan, UCOR’s Supply Chain Manager.
The UCOR supply chain team effort saved $59 million, a major contribution to the $2 billion savings goal. “Stewardship of taxpayer dollars is one of UCOR’s core values, and we are very proud of our team’s contribution to this milestone,” said UCOR President and CEO Ken Rueter.
UCOR is removing highly contaminated, dilapidated facilities from the Manhattan Project and Cold War at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Y-12 National Security Complex. Once the buildings are removed, UCOR cleans up the soil so that the land can be reused, much like is happening as new nuclear companies locate at the former K-25 Gaseous Diffusion Facility—cleanup today for a nuclear tomorrow™.
“To complete our work, our procurements range from renting high-reach cranes and other heavy equipment to buying thousands of tons of concrete, a wide range of personal protective equipment, and more,” Dickerson said. “The SCMC is an important part of our business strategy, and I’m proud of our team’s dedication finding the best possible solution every time.”
UCOR is the DOE Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management’s lead environmental cleanup contractor. The company’s ~2,500 workers are dedicated to safely reducing environmental risk on the Oak Ridge Reservation while helping DOE’s Office of Science and the National Nuclear Security Administration continue their important missions.
