UCOR has demolished the east side of Alpha-2 and has begun demolishing the final portion, the west end, reflecting the significant progress on the largest demolition project at Y-12.
To date, crews have demolished approximately 180,254 square feet. The east side demo was a huge undertaking, resulting in 133,052 square feet demolished. Crews have demolished 47,202 square feet of the west end, which is expected to be completed ahead of schedule in January 2026.
Crews are also removing lead from two rooms of the structure. An estimated 783,471 pounds of lead are expected to be removed by December and downsized and shipped to the Nevada National Security Site by June 2026.
Crews have already removed all the lead from one of the rooms, located on the southwest side of Alpha-2. They began removing it from the second room today.
