To highlight the safe and successful processing of the oldest drum on the TWPC footprint, the team hosted a celebratory luncheon today. This specific drum contained radium-contaminated waste and had been on site since 2012. It had presented challenges and was moved into the hot cell in 2019.
Through coordination with waste programs, the waste processing team, and radiological controls, the hot cell crew was able to complete processing from October 2025 through January 2026. This required special packaging, new processes and procedures, and techniques like grouting that were not previously utilized in the hot cell.
Achievements like this are reducing risk and furthering UCOR’s cleanup mission. Congrats to the TWPC team!
