School days bring traffic congestion. School buses are picking up their passengers, children on bikes are hurrying to get to school before the bell rings, and harried parents are trying to drop their children off before work. It’s never more important for motorists to slow down and pay attention than when children are present — especially before and after school.
This month’s Vehicle Safety Committee Toolbox Topic (attached) provides a back-to-school vehicle safety checklist designed to keep children and motorists safe. Remember that the area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children As a driver, be sure to stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and/or exit the bus.
Be alert; children are often unpredictable. By exercising care and caution, motorists and children can safely navigate school zones.
