As temperatures drop and clouds roll in, THE HIVE LSIT representing 701 Scarboro has kicked off the season with several activities focused on safety at work and home.
In October, THE HIVE interacted with the workforce on what to look for and how to stay safe as seasons change moving toward the holidays. Topics included inspecting your primary and backup heat sources, checking electronics and cords for wear/damage, and being aware of lithium battery safety (especially in smartphones and similar devices).
THE HIVE also led four parking lot walkdowns with 20+ participants identifying safety concerns and providing positive observations, promoting well-maintained worksites across 701 Scarboro and 90 and 100 Union Valley.
Wrapping up October with a bang, THE HIVE crushed its safety observation goal, receiving 173 safety observation cards in just four weeks. This accomplishment proves the team’s commitment to the SOC program, supporting UCOR’s corporate values.
Safety observations are important to maintaining UCOR’s robust safety culture. Filling one out not only makes you think about safety but also makes you four times less likely to get injured at work. As safety observations increase, injuries decrease.
Safety Observations are integral to our safety and the work we do and can be submitted on the Safety Observation Card website.
A few safety observation reminders:
- Positive. Observe the work that’s been done – We do great work at UCOR, so if you observe someone working safely or notice a safe and well-maintained worksite, fill out a safety observation that recognizes this.
- Trending. Report a hazard that has already been corrected – When you a report a hazard that you’ve already corrected as part of your normal work scope, you give valuable data about hazards that may otherwise go unnoticed. We provide our safety professionals with better leading indicators to help proactively prevent accidents and injuries.
- Elevate. Raise attention to an existing hazard – You should always report immediate hazards to your supervisor or the Facility Manager. You can also fill out a Safety Observation on an existing hazard to help ensure that it is tracked or elevated to a higher priority level within the organization.
We’re interested in hearing what other LSITs are working on. If you’d like to share your team’s activities in Newsline, please send the information to Ryan.Getsi@orcc.doe.gov.
