Oak Ridge, Tenn., June 29, 2017 – URS | CH2M Oak Ridge LLC (UCOR) welcomes seven students from five universities to a 10-week summer internship program where they are being immersed in topics and activities related to their chosen field of study.
As part of the development of the intern program, several educational institutions as well as internship programs from other Department of Energy contractors were consulted. This provided valuable insight that went into establishing the UCOR intern program.
The program aims to promote growth and education and provide valuable on-the-job experience to each student. The UCOR internship program will include site tours of the East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP), the Y-12 National Security Complex and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
The program features various organizational leaders who will meet with the interns throughout the weeks to offer advice, share experiences and professional knowledge. Each intern has been paired with a mentor in a department to help guide them through the summer.
The students will gain professional career experience through projects and assignments in their related department given by the appointed mentors. Interns will also learn about UCOR as a company and the environmental cleanup work it is doing at the East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP) and other parts of the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Reservation. ETTP was once home to the Manhattan Project uranium enrichment complex that played a key role in developing the atomic weapons that ended World War II.
”UCOR was fortunate in identifying this group of exceptional interns for this summer,” Roger Petrie, program coordinator, said. “They each bring enthusiasm and a willingness to learn that helps UCOR and their preparation for a future career.”
