After evaluating the Y-12 S3 Pond Parking Lot, a closed CERCLA remediation site, UCOR’s Y-12 Surveillance and Maintenance Project Manager Paul Waldschlager noticed damaged curbing and erosion concerns on the north side. Parking spaces in this area were immediately removed from use. Waldschlager engaged the Y-12 Plant Shift Superintendent and Environmental Compliance leads from both UCOR and CNS to develop a solution.
Crews from UCOR Landfill Operations quickly performed the necessary repairs on Friday, May 1, prior to forecasted heavy rain. This rain could have potentially caused additional damage. Landfill Operations also placed riprap along the north slope of the parking lot to reduce future erosion concerns. This rapid response allowed CNS to seal and re-stripe the lot, returning all the north spaces back to service.
“Without the support from Landfill Operations crews, we would not have been able to stabilize the area quickly,” Waldschlager said. “Their immediate support prevented the condition from getting worse.”
