As we start moving into the holiday season, it’s a good time to share information from Fire Prevention Month, which was observed during October. With increased cooking, Christmas lights, and large gatherings, take time to familiarize yourself with the proper actions to take in the event of a fire or explosion. Knowing how to respond can make all the difference in protecting yourself and those around you.
If a fire occurs, report the incident and call the fire department immediately. In accordance with the annual fire extinguisher awareness training, you may attempt to extinguish the fire.
Don’t wait to evacuate and remember these precautions:
- Stay low: If smoke is present, crawl low to the ground to avoid smoke inhalation.
- Check doors: Use the back of your hand to check the upper, middle, and lower portions of a closed door. If hot, do not open it. Seek another exit. If cool, brace yourself and open slowly.
- If clothing catches fire: Do not run. Stop, drop, and roll to extinguish the flames.
Never reenter a burning building unless you are trained and wearing the proper protective equipment.
Review the full Emergency Actions Guide on the Emergency Services space of the UCOR HUB for additional guidance. Familiarizing yourself with these procedures before an emergency helps ensure you are prepared to respond safely when every second counts.
