An unexpected leak developed in a potable water line at the ORNL Process Waste Treatment Complex (PWTC) Building 3608 late on Sunday, and by the end of the day on Monday UCOR’s ORNL Nuclear Operations team had isolated the leak and restored potable water to critical components. Potable water at Building 3608 is vital as it supplies seal water to process waste pumps.
To make repairs, the 24/7/365 operation at PWTC had to temporarily shut down. Over the course of approximately 10 hours, workers identified the source of the leak, developed a solution, created the work package, mobilized crews, welded in an isolation valve, isolated the leak, and placed the PWTC back online.
“The hard-working crews and support staff of ORNL Nuclear Operations were able to complete this repair in a timely manner, allowing us to return to normal operations as quickly as possible,” said Matt Brantley, UCOR ORNL Nuclear Operations Maintenance Manager.
Congratulations to the team for its quick response!
