Q: Why are we not on the tropical shift when people working at Y-12 are dealing with extreme heat … we are all UCOR workers and ORNL is on the tropical shift now.
A: To determine if Y-12 needed to switch to a tropical shift like our ORNL counterparts, Industrial Hygiene performed a temperature study inside buildings where crews could be at risk for heat-stress. Based on the temperature study, there was less than a 1-degree difference in temperature inside the building despite an hour earlier start in the day. Since the purpose of the tropical shift is to reduce risks associated with heat stress, the lack of impact it would make to temperatures inside the facility reduces the need to transition our workforce to the tropical shift at Y-12.
Q: What is the plan to get more workers on the ground to do more work for same money?
A: UCOR’s current budget funding looks very strong, and we believe our budgets and scope of work for our current workforce is optimal to deliver our mission work. Additionally, from parking, changing rooms, conference rooms, etc., we lack the space and capacity to add workers to our cleanup areas on the Oak Ridge Reservation. However, as modernization continues in Oak Ridge, future additions to our workforce could be possible.
Q: Will UCOR continue custom software applications?
A: Yes, we will continue creating “custom” software applications for projects to support our mission work. The UCOR Commercial-Off-the-Shelf and Development Team regularly meets with projects to discuss their needs and requirements.
