UCOR crews at Y-12’s Alpha-4 are working to remove roughly 4,000 gallons of mercury found throughout the facility. To help with this process, workers are testing a coating material called FerroBlack® along with vermiculite (an absorbent material) on the first floor. Testing began two weeks ago and will determine how FerroBlack and vermiculite work together to control mercury vapors.
