Traditional Type 1 hard hats have protected workers for decades, but as UCOR is phasing in Type 2 safety helmets, we are offering a higher level of protection. In addition to top-impact protection, Type 2 helmets are designed to absorb side impacts. They feature integrated chin straps that help keep the helmet securely in place during slips, trips, falls, or sudden movement.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, nearly 20% of workplace head injuries are associated with slips, trips, and falls, while almost half result from contact with objects or equipment. Traditional hard hats can come off during a fall, leaving workers unprotected when they need protection most.
The transition is especially important because slips, trips, and falls remain UCOR’s leading injury type across the Oak Ridge Reservation. While no single piece of personal protective equipment can eliminate risk, providing workers with equipment that stays in place and protects against lateral impacts adds another layer of defense when unexpected falls occur.
Just as technology has advanced across every aspect of the workplace, head protection has evolved as well. By investing in modern equipment today, UCOR is taking another proactive step to reduce risk, protect its workforce and ensure every employee has access to the best available protection so they can go home the same way they came to work.
