[Supervisor Success: Mastering People Skills & Cultivating High-Performing Teams is a monthly series from UCOR’s Administrative Services & Human Resources Director Mary Alice Douglass designed to support front line supervisors.]
Keeping your team motivated is a critical part of being a supervisor, and it directly affects how productive, engaged, and likely to stay they are. Beyond just money, people are often driven by things like recognition, career growth, and feeling like their work matters. The trick is to figure out what truly motivates each person on your team, because it’s different for everyone.
You can boost motivation by creating a workplace where people feel valued, respected, and challenged. This means giving them chances to learn new skills, letting them have some say in their work, and celebrating their wins. Being open about company goals and how each person’s work contributes to the bigger picture also gives them a sense of purpose.
Try this: This month, have a “stay interview” with one team member. Ask them what keeps them motivated, what they enjoy most, and what would make their experience even better.
Also, try this: When assigning tasks, always explain how that task connects to the team’s goals or the company’s mission. Help them see the bigger impact of their work.
Avoid this: Don’t assume everyone is motivated by the same things; a one-size-fits-all approach won’t work. And never make promises about rewards or opportunities that you can’t actually deliver.
You can find the entire series of Supervisor Success articles on the Human Resources space of UCOR Hub.
