Nineteen months of coordination and planning have finally paid off as the first shipment of sodium shields departed from the Oak Ridge Reservation to Veolia’s facility located at Waste Control Specialists in Andrews, Texas. This is the first of three shipments that will be made under the Sodium Shield Vitrification Demonstration Project . This project will demonstrate Veolia’s ability to safely and compliantly size reduce and treat the shields using its GeoMelt® technology.
Many hours were spent by UCOR’s Transportation Program management, OREM’s Transportation SMEs, UCOR Waste Management, Nuclear Facility Safety, and TRU Waste Operations personnel to develop the packaging strategy and work execution to enable this shipment. Congratulations to the entire team on enabling a path for this legacy waste stream and reducing DOE’s liability.
