Crews at the Transuranic Waste Processing Center (TWPC) have begun loading waste into shielded container assemblies (SCAs), which they received in July. These special waste containers include lead shielding and weigh nearly 3,000 pounds. The waste being loaded is remote-handled waste that had no readily available packaging to support a shipment to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) until these containers were identified.
Additional remote-handled waste was originally processed and packaged in removable lid canisters (RLCs), but due to a change in the acceptance criteria at WIPP, RLCs are no longer an option. Workers will now reload waste that has already been processed and certified into the new SCAs for future offsite shipment to WIPP.
“The team has done a great job preparing and executing this safely and compliantly to meet the new acceptance criteria from WIPP,” said Floor Supervisor Dalton Boatman. “I applaud the crew and their work for setting the standard with the SCA process.”
