Nuclear And Waste Management Operations
As you may be aware, we have been working on a reorganization that combines Nuclear Operations and Waste Management functions into one organization. Because there are so many related activities and functions between the two, combining the organizations creates a synergy that will allow for more effective and efficient operations. The new organization is called Nuclear and Waste Management Operations (NuWMO).
Another important change is that the maintenance function for nuclear facilities, which once fell under Nuclear Operations, has now moved under the newly created Mission Operations organization, led by Sam Dolynchuk. Moving maintenance out of Nuclear Operations allows our team to have a more singular focus and attention to operations while Sam’s organization ensures the maintenance of these facilities.
Workers in the field should not notice any major differences in day-to-day operations. Because of the increased scope in this organization and the vital importance of these functions to not only UCOR’s operations but also the support we provide to the Science missions at ORNL and the support provided to the DOE complex by TWPC, we have brought in James Harris as the NuWMO Deputy to assist with the management.
I look forward to moving into this new era of nuclear and waste operations and continue to make the impressive achievements like those we experienced over the past year.
Jay Mullis
Senior Vice President of Nuclear and Waste Management Operations
Mission Operations
The new Mission Operations organization centralizes maintenance and asset management to directly support DOE’s long-term ‘EM as a Service’ initiative for enduring mission support. We have worked closely NuWMO, led by Jay Mullis, and End State Delivery, led by Clint Wolfley, to ensure seamless integration between the organizations geared toward continuing cohesive delivery of maintenance with no impact on day-to-day operations.
This will allow the NuWMO organization to have a singular focus on the operation of those facilities while Mission Operations provides maintenance and critical projects as a service organization.
The new Mission Operations organization is chartered to optimize our maintenance and asset management programs for the future and ensure effective planning so that our maintenance workforce is ready to work. Work control, facility management, conduct of operations, maintenance, and asset management (including real property, fleet management, heavy, mobile, and portable equipment) will become part of the Mission Operations organization. Additionally, shipping and receiving and warehousing functions will report to Mission Operations as well as the scheduling and prioritization of maintenance.
Finally, the Mission Operations organization will also have a Projects organization to lead our General Plant Projects (GPPs), like the evaporator replacement, Capital Projects like the construction of Environmental Management Disposal Facility (EMDF), and various life extension initiatives to ensure UCOR is positioned for success. Our goal is to improve efficiency and cost effectiveness, ensuring that we remain investment-worthy, and deliver quality service with the taxpayer dollars entrusted to us.
Thank you for your adaptability and flexibility as we navigate these transitions.
Sam Dolynchuk
Senior Vice President of Mission Operations
