The greatest challenge for the Environment Management Waste Management Facility (EMWMF) Operations team is safely and compliantly managing landfill wastewater, including 5 to 23 million gallons of contact water per year. Critical infrastructure, such as the four Contact Water Tanks (CWTs) at the site, support this effort. Each CWT has a capacity of 240,000 gallons.
Since these tanks first entered serviced in 2011, they have exceeded their planned useful life with some showing signs of degradation. In 2025, tanks B and D were removed from service, completely rebuilt, and returned to operations. Tanks A and C remained fully functional, but external components were significantly rusted. Crews recently repaired and mitigated the rust to help ensure compliant wastewater management for the remaining operational life of EMWMF.
“By performing this maintenance activity in advance, EMWMF water management systems are ready and available for the start of the rainy season,” said EMWMF Superintendent Brandon Justice.
