Every October we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month by emphasizing the importance of early detection, treatment, and emotional support. Navigating breast cancer can be one of the most difficult physical challenges. However, the mental and emotional toll can be equally challenging.
Some people may experience loss of identity, anxiety, or depression. Recognizing signs of distress such as persistent worry, loss of sleep, and social withdrawal is important. Reaching out to loved ones or a mental health professional can help individuals cope throughout treatment and recovery.
Family and friends can have a huge impact by listening without judgment, offering compassion, and providing concrete help. Instead of saying, “Let me know if you need anything,” offer specific support such as providing a meal, transportation, or handywork. Sometimes reminding someone they are not alone is the most meaningful support of all.
