Supporting cleanup operations critical to UCOR’s mission highlights one of the most dangerous activities faced every day—driving. UCOR’s Vehicle Safety Committee has recorded more than 485,000 miles driven across the Oak Ridge Reservation during the first four months of 2026. Eight vehicle-related incidents were reported during this time frame, including backing accidents, contact with structures and equipment, and a forklift loading incident.
Zero accidents is an attainable goal: Miles driven are expected to increase every year. UCOR’s goal for the workforce is to attain zero accidents. Through a questioning attitude, situational awareness, and learning prevention techniques, this goal can become a reality.
Prevention techniques can help keep accidents to a minimum, or even better, zero, Examples of prevention techniques are:
- conducting 360-degree walkaround
- using backup cameras and mirrors
- using guides and trained spotters in congested areas
- limiting backing whenever possible
The Vehicle Safety Committee will be updating our current miles driven and incidents each month to highlight the importance of maintaining strong situational awareness while supporting cleanup efforts.
