As concerns continue to grow around cases of hantavirus, I wanted to send a reminder to the workforce of precautions you can take and be aware of when working in areas where rodents may be present.
Hantavirus is a rare, but serious respiratory disease spread primarily through contact with infected rodent droppings, urine, or saliva.
People can become exposed when contaminated particles are stirred into the air during activities such as cleaning enclosed spaces, storage areas, cabins, or outbuildings.
Symptoms often begin with fatigue, fever, and muscle aches before progressing to coughing and shortness of breath. Health experts encourage anyone experiencing symptoms after potential rodent exposure to seek medical attention promptly.
Safety professionals recommend avoiding sweeping or vacuuming rodent-contaminated areas, which can spread particles into the air. Instead, contaminated surfaces should be ventilated and disinfected before cleanup. Wearing gloves and appropriate respiratory protection is also encouraged when handling potentially contaminated materials.
While the disease remains uncommon, awareness and proper preventive measures can significantly reduce exposure risks both at work and at home.
